Ever since it began in 1977, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has become a world-class marathon attracting both locals and top runners from around the world! For this year’s race, Sunday, October 7, 45,000 participants registered in a record six days—so unfortunately, it sold out for participants wanting to sign up. Don’t worry, though! That doesn’t mean you don’t have to miss out on the fun! The very first Chicago Marathon was also known as “The people’s race anyone can come and enjoy,” and this still holds true today.

The fun will begin Thursday, October 5 with a two-day, free-to-the-public Health and Fitness Expo at McCormick Place Convention Center. With more than 200 exhibitors, the expo will offer Bank of America Chicago Marathon merchandise and the latest in running footwear, apparel, nutrition and technology. After that, plant yourself along the 26.2-mile course throughout the city, and cheer on your favorite runner, or just cheer on the masses!

And when the race ends in Grant Park, celebrate victory (either yours or someone else’s) with the 27th Mile Post-Race Party in Grant Park’s Butler Field! The outdoor party will have tons of food, beverages and live entertainment. Plus, it’s free to the public!

Not able to see the marathon in person? NBC Chicago will provide complete live TV and online coverage of the marathon on race day. Enjoy the marathon in the comforts of your own room at Broughton Hotels of Chicago – City Suites Hotel, The Majestic Hotel or The Willows Hotel!

September in Chicago means one thing: Oktoberfest time. These annual celebrations are a pretty big deal with the locals considering Chicago’s rich German heritage. Honestly, could you think of a better way to welcome the fall season than enjoying a beautiful Indian summer day with homemade bratwurst in one hand and a cold beer in the other? Check out just some of these local Oktoberfests and celebrate German heritage—Chicago style:

The Berghoff Oktoberfest
September 12 – 14, 2012
John C. Kluczynski Federal Plaza
At the corner of Adams and Dearborn

The 27th annual Berghoff Oktoberfest is the largest and longest running Oktoberfest in Chicago. The festival will offer traditional German faire (bratwursts and beer, of course), traditional performances by Johnny Wagner Band and nightly performances by other local favorite bands. Take your picture with the official mascot, Herman the German, for a chance to win cool prizes, and watch the official Prince and Princess of Oktoberfest get crowned! With free admission and open to the public daily, there’s something in store for everyone!

Oktoberfest Chicago
September 28 – 30, 2012
St. Alphonsus Church
Lakeview – At the corner of Lincoln, Wellington and Southport

St. Alphonsus’s Oktoberfest ends Chicago’s outdoor festival season with traditional German flair. With $5 admission, locals and visitors alike can experience authentic German food, polka dance lessons, the “oom-pah” of German bands, the music of area headliner bands and tons of activities for kids (“Kinderfest”). Festival go-ers can also experience this Oktoberfest like a true Bavarian—by becoming a Brewmaster! For $100, each Brewmaster will receive a commemorative 2012 Oktoberfest stoneware stein; discount-priced stein refills; two free homemade bratwursts; four weekend passes to the festival; three complimentary beers; and more.

So whether you’re German or not, raise your stein, wear your favorite lederhosen and dance to German and Bavarian music! Celebrate Oktoberfest in Chicago!

Chicago, are you ready for some football?

This Sunday, September 9, marks a day that Chicago football fans have been waiting for all year—the Chicago Bears Season Opener. Put on your best blue and orange, head on down to Soldier Field and celebrate one of Chicago’s most anticipated sporting events of the year!

New to ‘Da Bears’ scene? Here are some things to expect when they play the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday:

Since the Season Opener kicks off at noon, Bears fans will fill into the Soldier Field parking lot around 6 a.m. (or earlier) to tailgate. Rain or shine, you will see fans cooking on the grill, tossing the pigskin back and forth and having a good time while getting ready to cheer the Bears to a W.
Before entering the football stadium, fans will be greeted by the Chicago Bears drumline.
Leave the hats, scarves and mittens at home! Just because it’s football season doesn’t mean the chilly fall weather has hit Chicago quite yet.
Are you a Colts fan? Don’t say the Chicago Traveler didn’t warn you—expect a (sometimes) friendly and persistent heckling from some of the Bears’ most passionate and loyal fans.

Don’t have tickets for this weekend’s game? You still have seven more chances to see “The Monsters of the Midway” play at Soldier Field. Check out their 2012-2013 Home Schedule today!
